In this video, we explore LXD networking for Linux virtual machines. LXD offers a variety of different mechanisms to connect your VMs to your physical network, or simply expose services running on them to devices on your network. We'll start out by looking at the default LXD network architecture, and then discuss how forwarding rules are used to access network ports on LXD VMs. Next, we'll discuss MacVLAN and some of the caveats you'll want to consider. Finally, we'll cover bridged networking, which allows LXD virtual machines to share the Linux host's physical network adapter.

We'll also run through a demo of how to set up network forwarding rules, associate a secondary IP address that's dedicated to a virtual machine, and how MacVLAN and bridged LXD profiles are configured.

In this video, we introduce the open source LXD engine, and how you can create Linux virtual machines with it. LXD uses a client-server architecture, where LXD is the daemon (service), and "lxc" is the command line tool used to interact with the LXD engine. It is very similar to the client-server architecture used by Docker Engine.

LXD is excellent for:

➡️ Self-hosting network services (object storage, REST APIs, e-mail, etc.)
➡️ Running automated tests on different Linux distributions and versions
➡️ Learning about different Linux distributions, with minimal installation effort

You can use the pre-built Linux virtual machine images available at https://images.linuxcontainers.org to select a Linux distribution and version that you'd like to deploy to your virtual machine host. There are pre-built Linux OS images for popular distributions such as Alpine Linux, OpenSUSE Linux, Kali Linux, Ubuntu Linux, Linux Mint, and many others!
